A Phone Case That Fights Germs

By ROY FURCHGOTT  NY Times  5/20/10

Germaphobes, your phone case has arrived.

iSkin, which makes cases for cellphones, claims to be the only case maker to include antimicrobial protection in its phone covers.

Phones are, in fact, carriers of germs. A study conducted in 2007 found that on average, there is more bacteria on a mobile phone than on a toilet seat, door handle or bottom of a shoe. Of course, it doesn’t hurt if it’s only your own germs, but you might want reconsider using someone else’s phone, or else wash your hands afterward.

Some iSkin products incorporate Microban, which is used in many consumer products to ward off the growth of bacteria, mold and algae.

Mircoban is in the Solo FX SE and Revo2 for the iPhone, as well as covers for the BlackBerry Bold 9000, Curve 8900 and Storm 9530. The company said it would soon have Microban covers for the BlackBerry Curve 8520, 8530 and  Bold 9700.

Priced between $30 and $35, the cases are available online and from some retailers.
